For years, clients I worked with as a therapist in jails across the Midwest would say some version of this as they sat handcuffed to the table across from me, talking about what led to their incarceration. Their stories were always heartbreaking and yet also kind of expected, since I doubt ending up in jail is ever part of someone’s five-year plan.
