We’re all addicted to something. What is it for you? What is it that you want to let go of because you know doing so would lead to a simpler, more intentional life?
Many addictions start as self-soothing thoughts or behaviors. Self-soothing isn’t wrong. It’s an act of meeting a basic human need—such as love, connection, comfort, nourishment, belonging, physical touch, certainty, and variety—unconsciously or consciously.
There’s nothing wrong with having survival and coping instincts. You’re human. And not all soothers are harmful. Some helpful soothers include meditation, exercise, prayer, talking to a friend, laughing, being in nature, being with animals, and listening to music.
Whatever you do to meet your human needs is not ugly or shameful. It just may not be serving you anymore.
