What I remember most from sitting at the dinner table as a child is the passion between my parents. After sharing bits about our school days, my two sisters and I watched my parents light up as they eagerly processed with one another the events of their days. Both had careers that were deeply meaningful. Both were making the world a better place. And they liked each other a lot, we could tell.
My dad was a university professor. My mom, the first female (and bilingual) criminal defense lawyer in our town.
My sisters and I would give each other looks, desperate to be excused. We didn’t realize how special these moments were.
Late poet Mary Oliver asks, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” My parents showed me what it looks like to go all in on something that matters.
